Remembering Phil Bennett
A surfer, a drummer, and a father who lived fully for the things he loved
A Life Lived With the Volume Turned Up
Some people seem to live with the volume turned up fully present, fully passionate, fully alive. Phil Bennett was one of those people, and his story is one of a life lived in pursuit of joy.
Phil was a man of deep passions, and two of them defined much of who he was: the ocean and the rhythm of a drum kit.
The Drummer
He spent a great deal of his life playing in a band, finding in music that rare and wonderful thing a way to express himself, to connect with others, and to lose himself in something he loved. Anyone who has played music with friends knows the particular magic of it: the shared rhythm, the late nights, the feeling of being part of something larger than the sum of its players. Phil lived in that magic for most of his life.

The Surfer
And then there was the sea. Surfing wasn’t just a hobby for Phil; it was one of the great loves of his life. The ocean has a way of claiming people’s hearts the patience of waiting for the right wave, the rush of catching it, the deep peace of being out on the water with nothing but sky and salt and motion. For Phil, the waves were a place of freedom and joy, a love that stayed with him across the years.
Met by the Thing He Loved
It was while doing this thing he loved most that Phil passed, a few years ago, out on the water. It is impossible to write that sentence without feeling its weight the suddenness, the loss felt by everyone who loved him.
And yet, for those who knew Phil, there is also a strange and tender grace in it. He was met by the very thing that had given him so much joy throughout his life. He left this world immersed in one of his greatest loves, doing what made him feel most alive. Not everyone is so fortunate as to be carried out by their own deepest passion.

The Family He Leaves Behind
Phil leaves behind a family who carry his memory forward: two children and several grandchildren, a legacy of love that ripples through the generations.
He also leaves behind something less tangible but just as real a spirit, an energy, a zest for living that the people around him will never forget. The drummer’s rhythm, the surfer’s fearlessness, the father’s love: these are the things that made Phil who he was, and these are the things his family holds onto now.
How We Honored Him
For Phil’s tribute, we gathered his cherished photographs and brought them into gentle, respectful motion, paired with music a way for those who loved him to feel his warmth, his spirit, and his irrepressible love of life once more. The animation is an artistic interpretation, created not to recreate a literal moment but to evoke the feeling of his presence: the man who played, who surfed, who loved so fully.
A life like Phil’s lived with passion, music, and salt water deserves to be remembered with joy as much as with sorrow. We were honored to help his family hold him close.

For Phil Bennett: still riding the wave, still keeping the beat, still loved by everyone whose life he touched.
